log on

Definition To connect to a computer or computer network
Example 1) I log on to check my email several times a day.

2) I couldn't log on last night. There must be something wrong with my phone line.

Etymology When you enter or 'sign on to' a computer, your activity is recorded in an electronic 'log file'. A 'log' is a record of events, like a diary, and 'on' refers to entering the file. Since computers became popular in the 1970s, 'log on', 'log in', and 'login' have become very common terms.
